In my mind, I think of The Artiste Manquee as being divided into two "eras", the first consisting of strips 1-50 (i.e. batches 1 and 2) and the second, strips 51-92 (batches 3 and 4). This is because a whole lot changed when I decided to start on the third batch of strips. For one thing, I started drawing on larger paper, which allowed for more detail and better drawings in general. The biggest change of all was that at this point I decided to commit to putting out two strips per week instead of one, an experiment which was successful for about 2½ months before blowing up and causing the longest hiatus of the comic's run.
Also, yes, that is Simon the chipmunk. You can think of it as an author cameo.
